Abstract

Background: The Covid – 19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus has seriously affected the whole world. During the last 6 months of 2021 in Ho Chi Minh City, the number of pregnant women infected with Covid-19 increased, with many severe cases and some cases had died. A few babies of these mothers were also infected.

Objectives: The aim of study is to describe some epidemiological characteristics, clinical features and outcomes of newborns from mothers with COVID-19 at Hung Vuong Hospital from 7/2021 to 12/2021.

Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study.

Results: Among 1380 infants born to Covid-19-infected mothers at Hung Vuong Hospital in the period from 7/2021 to 12/2021, only 1.6% of babies were infected with SARS-CoV2 virus, and the mortality rate was low ( 0.1%) because of severe sepsis.

Most of the infected neonates were male (77.3%), full term ≥ 37 weeks (72.8%), birth weight ≥ 2500g (77.3%). Most of them had no symptoms, a few babies had atypical symptoms such as fever (9.1%), shortness of breath (9.1%), poor feeding (13.6%), skin rash (9,1%), pulmonary hemorrhage (4.55%), and the majority of infants did not need respiratory support (81.8%). Newborns who lying with their mothers in the first 24 hours had early positive results under 7 days (22.75%). Newborns who stay with their mothers more than 24 hours often had lately positive results over 48 hours (40.85%). The mean hospital stay was 16.7 days. The fastest time for a baby to have a negative test was 3 days.

Conclusion: Most infants born to the Covid -19-infected mothers had negative PCR SARS-CoV2 test results, and the prognosis was good. The newborns with positive tests were mostly asymptomatic. The mortality rate was low with severe infections as the main cause.
